Birdwatch on the Staiths

Saturday 15 August 2026
Start Time 12:00
14:00
Dunston Staiths

Join us for a peaceful morning of birdwatching to discover resident, wintering and migratory birds on the River Tyne.

Join us for a peaceful morning of birdwatching on the Dunston Staiths, a historic structure linked with our coal industry heritage, and a prime location for watching a diversity of resident and wintering birds on the Tyne Estuary.

From this raised platform set within the Tyne , you can enjoy spectacular views of the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside, along with the estuarine mudflats which are an important food source for birds.

Led by knowledgeable guides from Wild Intrigue, you will search for seasonal species such as Grey Heron, Shelduck, Cormorant, Redshank and Gulls and perhaps wildlife spotted in previous events such as Kestrel, Kingfisher and Grey Seal.

There will be plenty of opportunities to discover more about the local history and ecology of the birds you encounter, and to the importance of the Tyne Estuary for wildlife.

All species will be recorded as part of ongoing wildlife survey effort along the Tyne Derwent Way.

Key highlights:

  • guided event with experienced birdwatchers
  • learn about the local ecosystem and bird ecology
  • most suited for ages 12 and above (under 18's must be accompanied by an adult), however all ages and experience levels are welcome
  • binoculars available to borrow

Meeting point: Meet at the Tyne Derwent Way space at Duncton Staiths, Gateshead (///jokes.spoil.waving)
